A Way Illuminated: Starting a New Chapter

Hi everyone, and a warm, friendly welcome to my new blog, “A Way Illuminated.” I’m Mark, and I’m pleased you’ve stopped by. For the first time in quite a while, I feel like I’m on an even keel – steadier and more positive. This feels like a new chapter. Especially, after coming through a rather hard period where I often felt overwhelmed and anxious. That time is part of my story, and something I’ll explore more later.

Recently, I was diagnosed as autistic. My main feeling upon hearing the news was relief. A sense that I wasn’t ‘broken’ after all; I’d spent a long time feeling like I was broken. Of course, with that came the question of where to even begin understanding this part of myself.

A New Perspective

This new lens has already started to put so many things into perspective. Little things and big things – from social aspects of my life and friendships; to sensory sensitivities; emotional responses, and my need for structure and regularity. Everything is starting to make more sense. It’s exciting to be starting to explore myself in this new light. As a late-diagnosed, high-masking autistic person, I’m finding I’m looking back at past experiences with a fresh understanding.

Dewdrops on a leaf

And that’s really why I’ve started “A Way Illuminated.” This blog will be my space to explore life with this new understanding. I’m particularly curious as to what unmasking might look and feel like. It’s the beginning of a journey towards understanding my authentic self, and I’m keen to see where it leads.

I decided to share this journey; not just for my growth, but also with the hope that it might connect with others. Whether you’re an autistic adult; know an autistic adult; are someone interested in autism; a parent of an autistic child, or if you’re wondering about yourself – I hope you find something here that resonates.

So, what can you expect?

  • My Interests: I’m looking forward to sharing my passions – things like creativity, neuroscience, plants, mycology, and also writing about my experiences as a gay man and a parent, all from my evolving autistic perspective.
  • Personal Development: For me, this is about exploring my autistic identity and making my mental health a priority.
  • Creativity: This is a big part of my life! I’ll be sharing some of my art, crochet, photography, and digital projects, and talking about the joy and therapeutic benefits I find in being creative.

My aim is for this space to be reflective, honest, curious, and hopeful, as well as positive, friendly, kind, and supportive.

This is a journey of discovery, and I believe that sometimes, to see the path ahead, we first need to look within. I’d love for you to join me. Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments if anything here connects with you.

Welcome to A Way Illuminated.
